TEPRES
The Crimean Tatar Community of Canada has recently celebrated their first Tepres in Toronto, Ontario on June 4, 2006. Many people across Canada participated in this important cultural and historical event of Qirim Tatars making this event a great success.
According to tradition, Tepres serves as an opportunity for people to socialize and predict what the upcoming year would bring. This is achieved through a ceremonious unrolling of a type of home made bread called “kalakay”, equivalent to the North American pita. If the kalakay unrolls face up, that is a sign of good harvest and a good year ahead for Tatars.
In addition to the kalakay, other Tatar food such as kobete, jantik, sarayli, shish kebab, steaks and a wide assortment of delicious dishes were enjoyed by those who attended. Traditional Tatar songs were sung by our Canadian Qirim Tatar singer Ainur and people of all ages, from the young to the elderly, danced and enjoyed each other’s company. We would like to thank all of our members for participating in this social and cultural event. We hope to have the same success in the upcoming 2nd annual summer picnic which will be held at the end of July, 2006. We will keep you informed with more details to follow.
